Post and lintel

Post and lintel

They have the trilition position: two columns supporting a beam.

Lintel’s job: doors and windows. Lintels are weak when the material is too weak or the lintel too long

Post’s job: Resist the compression of the lintel weight and the structure above them. Post needs materials strong under compression.

Materials´ utility

Stone: post
Steel: post and lintel
Wood: to small structures as doors, post and lintel
Iron: lintel
Reinforced concrete: post and lintel
Brick: post and lintel
A good combination in a house: lintel on wood and post on brick

Frame structure:
An assembly of slabs, beams and columns.
Materials: wood, steel, reinforced concrete. The frame structure isn’t a masonry

- Supported frame
Slabs, beams, columns, lower columns, foundations, soil.
The supported framed structure can be used for taller structures

- Heavy timber framing: visible skeletal frame, filled with non-bearing wall. May be common on wood in England, France, Canada, and Germany.

- Light frame: lumbers organized on parallel to create a sort of “light box”, which later is filled with wood or cement.

- Balloon frame: it’s a basement made of concrete which is the base of the frame

- Platform frame: it’s a monolithic foundation elevated ½ meter over the ground.
The balloon and platform frame with the light frame made of wood are very economic and easy to construct.

Steel frame: the beams and columns are made of steel and placed in a rectangular way. Later, it’s covered with bricks or concrete.
Advantage of Steel frame: Cheap for tallest buildings, resist earthquakes, resist heat, it’s easy to construct; it’s recyclable and durable.

Also, the wood frame and steel frame are pre-cast elements, which not need an expert to assemble.
